Bol Òrìṣà Nlá had two lakes, and everybody drank from both. Then his wives said it was beneath him that witches should drink from his water - and he made the good lake his own.The witches did what anybody does. They consulted Ifá.When the dry season came it was his lake that emptied, and the mothers rose off the water and came for him. He ran to Ògún, who threw his machete up until it struck fire out of the air. They swallowed Ògún with his weapons still in his hands. He ran to Ṣàngó. He ran to every divinity there was. They swallowed all of them.He ran, last of all, to Ọ̀rúnmìlà.What happened in that house was not a battle. It was a meal, a fence, an argument about mercy, and a contract sworn on the ground - and it ended with a pregnant woman alive in the dawn light, because the man she came to eat would not break his own rule.Ọ̀sá Méjì is the Odù cast for the year at Ilé Ifẹ̀ by the Àràbà. This is the book of that Odù - one hundred painted pages, from the fire he carried down out of heaven to the oath that still runs the world, with a glossary and a closing note on the four things this story explains that a reader can still go and see.
