Caitlin (Kate) O'Rourke is not your typical Irish-American lass. At six-one and one-hundred-seventy-eight pounds, with dark skin, raven-black hair, and a nose like an eagle, the former MVP setter/middle blocker on the Italian Pro Volleyball circuit is a has-been in her late 20s, prematurely retired due to a blown-out knee. Although retirement does not sit well with Kate, she soon finds herself so entangled in other people's difficulties that she doesn't have time to dwell on her own problems. >As the sixth book of the series opens, Kate has been on a downer ever since the end of Book #5, Faire Thee Well. She just can't seem to get over the feelings of depression which have overwhelmed her, coupled with twinges of guilt. Thinking that perhaps a change of scenery might help shake her from her blue funk, she accepts a position as Head Basketball Coach at a small college for women in upstate Vermont. Just prior to the first game of the season, the best scorer on the team is found murdered. Kate also discovers that this gal had been bundling bets for a local bookie-bets on her own team. As Kate insinuates herself into the investigation, she becomes less certain that gambling had been the motive for the murder. But if not gambling, what else? And, if something else, what will the murderer do to keep Kate from uncovering it?
