NHB Modern Plays-The Hungry Ghost

A sexy horror rom-com exploring what takes root in the space between superstition and rationality. Premiered at the Bush Theatre, London, in 2026. 'I feel like a newborn out in the world for the first time.' Tonight’s the night. She’s moving into a new house with her (secret) girlfriend. And she’s not going to listen to her mum’s warnings – what does it matter if it’s the first night of the traditional Chinese ghost month? Parents will say anything to keep you at home. Caught between the expectations of her Chinese parents and her white girfriend, she unwittingly invites a hungry ghost into her life. Soon she’s wrestling for control of her own body as her carefully constructed house of lies comes tumbling down around her. Gripping and suspenseful, The Hungry Ghost is a sexy horror rom‑com that explores what takes root in the space between superstition and rationality. Mei Leng Yew's play premiered at the Bush Theatre, London, in 2026, directed by Ailin Conant.
