After a triumphant tour of England, where Australia had defeated England in the Test that gave birth to the Ashes, the Australians stopped off in America to play against a team from New York and a second against Philadelphia. Just four years before, an Australian XI led by Dave Gregory had narrowly avoided defeat to a Gentlemen of Philadelphia team which had met them on even terms in the inaugural first-class match for that city. Cricket had not progressed in Philadelphia since. This time, they decided to field an eighteen against their second Australian visitors and also included several professionals in their team. What followed helped to establish Philadelphia as a First-Class cricketing centre for the next 30 years.
