Iowa has always had a reputation for being a nice place. Friendly people. Quiet towns. Cornfields stretching to the horizon. And now and then, somebody gets murdered or decides robbing a bank sounds like a solid career move. Murdered in Their Sleep at Villisca, and Other Stories digs into some of the darker and stranger corners of Iowa history. There's Villisca, where eight people were murdered with an axe in 1912. The killer walked away, leaving behind suspects, accusations, theories, and a mystery that refuses to die. Then we have the bank robbers. Some came armed with careful plans. Others seem to have worked out the details somewhere between entering the bank and yelling, "Hand over the money." There were murders nobody could explain, criminals who almost got away, criminals who never had a chance, and lawmen trying to make sense of it. Some of the stories are dark, bizarre, and occasionally hard to believe. Iowa's history can be like that. Come for the corn. Stay for the crime.
