Monitoring and Assessment of Environmental Quality in Coastal Ecosystems, 4th Edition

The fourth edition of the Special Issue on "Monitoring and Assessment of Environmental Quality in Coastal Environments" features 11 research articles and one review contributed by experts from 19 countries. The studies apply diverse tools and methods across a broad range of coastal environments worldwide. Several contributions focus on highly complex transitional ecosystems, including: the Venice Lagoon (Italy); the Oder/Szczecin Lagoon in the Baltic Sea region-one of Europe's largest lagoons; the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto (ACE) Basin on the southeastern North American coastal plain in South Carolina (USA); and the wetlands of Doñana National Park (Spain)-a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, and one of Europe's most significant wetlands. The world's coldest coastal environments are also included, with one contribution specifically analyzing the effects of the rapid warming on an intertidal macroalgal species in Antarctica. Long-term monitoring studies of the Gulf of Trieste coastline (Adriatic Sea, Italy) and of the mangroves across 18 countries in the Wider Caribbean further enrich this Special Issue. Other key contributions include: a novel methodological approach for quantifying beach morphodynamic characteristics; an analysis of biological invasion risks in mangrove ecosystems caused by nearby port activities, conducted at Latin America's largest and most important port complex-the Port of Santos (Brazil); and a review of innovative remediation techniques for dredged sediments.
