Modern Vienna

A concise introduction to the cultural, social and political history of the city of Vienna from 1815. This book offers a concise history of modern Vienna, tracing the city’s social, economic, and cultural development from 1815 to the late twentieth century. It pays particular attention to the period between the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 and the end of the Second World War, with a special focus on the fin de siècle around 1900.Adopting this perspective, Modern Vienna provides a compelling reassessment of the established view that Vienna around 1900 was the ‘birthplace of modernity’. Combining cultural, social, and political history, the book serves both as a reliable introduction to the history of Vienna and as an important case study for readers interested in urban history more broadly. It will be of particular value to students of modern Viennese, Austrian, Central European, and urban history.
