This book presents an overview of scientific research conducted over the past 15 years by the Laboratory for Marine Microbiology at the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split, Croatia, together with collaborating partners. It compiles a series of case studies from diverse marine habitats of the Adriatic Sea, offering insight into microbial life in coastal and offshore environments. The book is organized around four main themes: microbial community structure, which describes the key components of marine microbial assemblages; the microbial food web, focusing on ecological interactions and carbon flux within microbial networks; extreme habitats, including anchialine caves and eutrophic meromictic saline lakes; and the application of microbial food web studies as indicators of marine environmental status in the context of the European Union Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
