Medieval Women

This beautifully illustrated, large format volume accompanies the British Library’s Autumn exhibition, which recovers women’s voices, visions and experiences in Britain and Europe from around 1100 to 1500. It presents women as authors, artists, scribes, patrons, readers, wives, mothers, daughters, leaders, workers, makers and traders, telling their histories through words and images. Through expert essays and around 40 spotlight studies, Medieval Women reveals a rich, complex world full of colourful characters and intriguing stories, with contributions ranging from Christine de Pizan, Joan of Arc and Julian of Norwich to Sibilla von Bondorff, Clemence of Barking and Margaret Paston. The project highlights star items from the British Library and major European collections, bringing to light deeply resonant, personal gems and keepsakes from this era. The title accompanies the British Library Exhibition and showcases items from the Library’s archive and European collections.

The work brings together careful scholarship and vivid illustration to illuminate the lives and legacies of medieval women, offering readers new perspectives on a pivotal period in European history.
