Marrow

Autumn, 1947. A detective drives up into the mountains to a coal town called Marrow, to reopen the coldest case in the county: a school bus that vanished twenty-two years ago on a quarter-mile of open road-sixteen children and their driver, gone, with no wreck, no bodies, and no explanation anyone has ever been able to give. The town receives him kindly. Too kindly. The bell above the diner swings and makes no sound. The falls roar from a distance and fall silent at their foot. The people answer his questions before he asks them, and speak of the dead in a tense that hasn't happened yet.And the deeper Mercer goes, the more he loses-his senses, one by one; his memory; his certainty that he came here for a case at all.Because Marrow is not a mystery to be solved. It is a mystery that solves you.He came to solve it. It came to keep him
