Mapping Maternal and Child Nutritional Health in South Bihar: & Nutrition Bihar

Adequate nutrition for mothers and children is essential for healthy growth and development, particularly during the critical period from birth to two years of age. Nutritional deficiencies during this stage increase vulnerability to illness, growth retardation, and long-term health consequences. Poor maternal nutrition adversely affects pregnancy outcomes, maternal health, and child survival, reducing maternal and child malnutrition, a key public health priority in developing countries. Despite gradual improvements, malnutrition levels in India remain high, with Bihar lagging behind the national average due to high fertility, mortality, and regional disparities in diet, healthcare access, and socio-cultural practices. Limited region-specific research further constrains the effectiveness of interventions. In this context, the book examines regional patterns and determinants of maternal and child nutritional health in Bihar, with special reference to South Bihar. Organised into seven chapters, the book analyses trends, key determinants, maternal-child nutritional linkages, and policy implications for improving nutritional outcomes.
