Management Accounting in the Retail Industry

Today, France has the highest number of large grocery stores per square meter compared to its European neighbors. Across France, there are more than 11,000 large grocery stores and more than 25,000 retail locations. The retail sector employs 640,000 people, 61% of whom are women. As such, it is one of the country's largest employers; each year, major hypermarket and supermarket chains hire 80,000 new employees. Changes in purchasing behavior and consumption patterns have forced major retailers to implement new strategies and adapt to the evolving needs of the market and customers. To this end, the retail sector has identified new challenges and initiatives to remain competitive in the face of the rise of private-label brands, online sales, and the development of new technologies. Management accounting plays a key role in steering the business; by enabling effective management of the company's operations, it is considered a strategic planning tool through its advisory role to senior management.
