Local Dynamics and Oil Rent in Niger

Oil production in a country can be interpreted in various and multidimensional ways. It can have positive or negative consequences that may lead to phenomena known as the "resource curse" or the "Dutch disease," depending on how the government uses this resource and on its ability to manage the issues surrounding it. In Niger, oil production is still in its experimental phase, and questions continue to arise about what the future of this process will look like. What impact will this resource have on the state and its people? What is the vision of an "oil state" held not only by the ruling class but also by the working classes? This book attempts to answer these questions. It offers a description and analysis of the various strategies adopted by local strategic actors and groups of actors in N'Gourti, Niger, with the aim of securing the largest share of "oil rent" for themselves.
