Wars of independence, conflicts of memories, post colonial sequels, the Algerian civil war, internal struggles... from both sides of the Mediterranean sea the effects of these wars are still being felt, like the aftershock of earthquakes. The relations between Algeria and France are bloody, passionate, obsessive, and permanently marked by a confrontational closeness. Coldly methodical, and without biased passion, the history of this tormented relationship is written rather spontaneously, and this exercise can be somewhat dangerous. One day, in June 1995, Benjamin Stora receives threats and a small wooden coffin in a large, beige envelope... This peculiar book, something between a historical study and a personal account, is punctuated by meetings with key personalities, and combines a reflection on the recording of history and the engagement of the historian, with a deeply original analysis of the relations between France and Algeria. A recognized expert on the history of North Africa, which he teaches at INALCO, Paris, Benjamin Stora is the author of about twenty books, including La Gangrène et l'Oubli.
