Le Plaisir

Adapted from three short stories by Guy de Maupassant, each tells a tale of pleasure. The first tells the story of an old man who regains his youth with the aid of a magic mask, in the second a prostitute has a romantic encounter and the final story concerns two young lovers, an artist and his model. Le Plaisir is a delicate portrait of love and desire. A favourite film of Jean-Luc Godard who called it ‘the greatest film made in France since the liberation’.Max Ophuls is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most revered directors in the history of cinema. His trademark array of lavish, fluid camera movements would influence generations of filmmakers to come. Among the many who have praised his genius are François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick (who believed ‘his camera could pass through walls’) and more recently directors such as Todd Haynes and Paul Thomas Anderson who called him his ‘idol’.English subtitles
