How a book read during childhood can influence the course of one's life. It all began with a book the author read in childhood, The Diary of Myriam Bloch. Its pages are engraved on her memory and when, after many years, she comes across the cherished title again, it becomes the catalyst for the writing of this life story. The narrator tells of her wonderful protected childhood in Algeria, steeped in Jewish and oriental tradition. While she lived in total harmony with her mixed heritage, she never could have imagined that Jews were being deported in France. But the reality of this unspeakable horror will inevitably catch up with her. The stories she hears of the death camps will change the way she sees herself forever. She becomes aware of what it means to be Jewish and, throughout her life and history, has never ceased exploring her identity.
