Broken by her mother's alcoholism, yes, but it was also outlandish and disturbing, lively and endearing, with her father hiding a secret and her brother eventually running away. The young narrator is the only one who holds out thanks to the characters of novels that she reads feverishly. With Alice leading the way, these characters take her into a parallel world where the beauty, energy and complexity of emotions are revealed to her, and tear her away from a day-to-day existence where her mother is a worthy nurse who can't be faulted by day, but becomes "the Queen" at midnight every night. Queen of her own descent into hell, locked in her own subterfuge, her filthy moods, her bouts of sentimentality and her regrets. The charm of Julien Dufresne-Lamy's novel is in the writing and the narrator's unusual and often amusing perception of the world. Everything feels light, nothing is quite ordinary in the hands of this author whose lucidity, humour, playfulness and unique style make this book a delicious treat, and transform every member of the family into a character in a fable. In this novel we come across Britney Spears, Calamity Jane, the Princess of Cleves, Emma Bovary, Bardamu and Little Nicolas to name but a few. And we watch the development of a child, then a teenager who, once she becomes an adult, finally manages to break free of her own story. Julien Dufresne-Lamy studied in Lyon and now lives in Paris. He is twenty-five years old. In My Head, My Name is Alice is his debut novel.
