La città ferita

A suitcase that won't shut, a Corinthians shirt folded on top like a relic, one photograph from 1924. Bruno, a São Paulo history teacher, arrives in Milan to speak at a Catholic congress on the city and its poor. His host is a distant cousin, a Milanese finance man with a white apartment, four months off cigarettes, and a small, defensible stake in a redevelopment project he has never looked at closely.Over five days the two of them, a Sevillian traditionalist who came for a chapel, and three German cyclists whose holiday quietly ends collide in a shabby diocesan center that runs a soup kitchen, a listening room, and an archive of letters written by Italians who left.La città ferita is a quiet novella about argument and its limits. Order against mercy, memory against the numbers that pave over it. Nobody converts. Nobody wins the debate. People chop bread, wash pans, and catalogue the belongings of the dead. For readers who like literary fiction where the moral weight sits in ordinary work.
