When the ranger told our tour group of the 1733 slave rebellion on St. John led by an African King named Bolombo, the story grabbed hold of me. Then my hiking partner and I became lost on the island, abandoned by the ranger. Like those rebellious slaves. we were running for our lives. The sound of drums from three hundred years ago, a message meant for African ears, reached us. We were joined by the djambi spirits and, for a moment, our souls became one with the island.
