Written in London during the winter of 1943, this work remains unfinished. The renowned philosopher Simone Weil, deeply engaged with the Free French movement, did not live to complete it. Weil died at the age of 34 from tuberculosis on 24 August 1943, leaving behind writings that Camus repeatedly highlighted as highly significant to his own thinking. The project was published posthumously in 1949, under the direction of Albert Camus, who famously described Weil as one of the most influential figures in his life.
