Jonah and the Great Fish

Jonah was commanded to preach God's Word to Nineveh-a strong, violent city filled with Israel's enemies. But Jonah fled in the opposite direction. He knew that God's Word would not be powerless. He feared that the people of Nineveh might hear it, repent, and receive the mercy Jonah did not want them to have. From the storm-tossed sea and the belly of the great fish to the crowded streets of Nineveh, Jonah and the Great Fishshows young readers that God accomplishes His gracious purpose through His effective Word. The Holy Ghost works through that Word, bringing sinners to repentance and creating faith-even among those whom we regard as enemies. The story then leads children from Jonah's three days in the depths to Jesus Christ, who gave "the sign of the prophet Jonah." Christ willingly entered death for sinners, was buried, and rose bodily on the third day. His resurrection is the great sign that death has been conquered, His sacrifice accepted, and forgiveness made certain.Richly illustrated in a warm, classical style, this volume concludes with "Christ's Promise for You" and a catechetical page connecting the story with the Apostles' Creed, the work of the Holy Ghost, and the Christian hope of the resurrection.
