Join Reverend Elizabeth Williamson, rector of Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church in Canal Ville, New Jersey; her husband, Detective Church Gagne, a former CIA officer; veteran homicide Detective Ronnie Gruenberg; Chief of Police Tom Johnson; and Detective Sergeant Miguel Comejo from the New York-New Jersey Port Authority's police department as they investigate a series of puzzling murders. The first murder happens after Christmas in 2023 at the Twenty-Third Street PATH train station in Lower Manhattan, followed by three more murders in Morris County starting in early January 2025. The main suspect is Paul Richter, who is married to Taylor and has twin boys. He is a retired banker fired by the first three victims, and investigators suspect his motive to be revenge. The last victim, Jessica Serrano, complicates matters because she was Richter's mistress, which doesn't fit the established pattern. Despite strong suspicions against him, his alibis present significant challenges for the investigators. Recurring characters include Judy, Elizabeth's tech-savvy cousin; Billy, their lively five-year-old son; and Mrs. O., their dedicated au pair. Other notable figures are Morris County Prosecutor Jon Anderson, church administrator Amy, and racketeers from the Genovese and DeCavalcante crime families. Fans of earlier stories will recognize Karl and Klaus from The Ostler's Daughter, along with contract killers Layla and Chad from Feerick's Fine Shirts. As this story of idée fixe and revenge unfolds, it culminates in a gripping, unexpected conclusion.
