The book studies and examines the rise of Islam in the Cooch Behar frontier of the Bengal region and the socio-economic and cultural interactions between Hindus (primarily Rajbanshis) and Muslims within the context of the changing socio-political and economic scenario of the sixteenth to the early twentieth century. This remains one of the least studied areas of South Asia. It draws attention to the subtle, dynamic, and complex relationship between the two communities. The author highlights, by using archival sources, the rise of fundamentalism that troubled the composite culture in the 1940s in Cooch Behar.
