Internal Mobility and Agricultural Development Dynamics

In Senegal, the Mouride brotherhood has taken on significant socio-economic importance since its founding by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba. Very early on, the Mourides developed a peasant culture centered on the conquest and cultivation of agricultural land. Originating in the Peanut Belt, the Mourides eventually conquered all the land in this part of Senegal. In recent years, the Mourides' agricultural expansion has extended to the Senegal River Valley, thereby generating forms of internal mobility between the Peanut Belt and the Senegal River Valley. Through their religious and financial power, the Mourides have begun to occupy an important socio-economic position in the valley. This economic dynamic driven by Mouride neo-entrepreneurs cannot be ignored, as it is responsible for a significant expansion of cultivated land and a substantial economic momentum. Mouride actors, each according to their means, actively participate in the agricultural development of the Senegal River Valley.
