INREVERSE: A Short Story

Ana Sokolova said she killed Mary Hastings. She said it calmly, with wet eyes and a cigarette, in a small, airless room with a bolted table. What she did not say-what this story goes back to find-is why Thirteen years ago, Ana was a quiet observer in the Walton household, a woman of order in a family defined by its absence. She became the silent guardian of a young boy's world, a role that demanded as much discretion as it did devotion. Moving backwards through a decade of secrets, from the gilded isolation of the Walton estate to the modern independence of a city magazine, the narrative unpicks a life built on careful choices. In a world where every action has a consequence, the arrival of Mary Hastings is the one variable Ana cannot ignore. The end is already written. It is the beginning that hides the truth.
