Home Chemistry Projects

This project text is a supplement to the study of chemistry. Three in-depth projects will keep the student busy throughout the year setting up experiments, making measurements and collecting data, making calculations and graphs, writing formal research reports and giving oral presentations. The projects are not expensive, but they are technically advanced. The chemicals are household commodities with very low hazard or toxicity, yet the chemistry is very challenging. These are projects, not simple experiments. Each project is portrayed as an industrial challenge. The student is a representative of a research firm that is hired to resolve a problem or give quantitative design information. His work, with conclusions and recommendations will be presented in a written and oral report. The projects include a study of the kinetics of rusting, a study of explosions, and a study of electrolysis. The projects can be set up with readily available materials. These projects are recommended for students who do well in math and science.
