Contrary to traditional views that portray art either as a "mirror of society" or as a work committed to social causes, Herbert Marcuse believes that such definitions are narrow-minded and dangerous. Art must be for everyone and against all forms that disfigure established industrial society-a society under technological domination that stifles all forms of change. Better yet, alongside philosophy, art must help bring to fruition the possibilities for fulfillment that existence offers.
