This book is a research study on Guinea's efforts to build the democracy to which its people aspire, and on potential solutions that could enable the country to overcome the major obstacles it currently faces. As a key player and privileged witness to many of the trials the country has endured, I wish to help ensure that the country charts its own course toward achieving the human security and stability necessary for harmonious development. Guinea has everything it needs to develop, but its real problem lies with its elite, who think more of themselves than of their country. This work identifies the problems that hinder national unity and reconciliation: the institutional failures that prevent citizens from trusting the state, the challenges that this breakdown of trust creates, and the ways to overcome these difficulties. Efforts are focused primarily on the shortcomings of the Independent National Human Rights Institution, which, if functioning properly, could serve as an effective remedy and solution to many of these problems and drive the country's progress.
