Gregorovius stand eines Tages, wie er erzählt, auf der Tiberbrücke vor der Engelsburg und hier ward er, wie durch eine Art Inspiration, von dem Gedanken ergriffen, die Geschichte der Stadt Rom im Mittelalter zu schreiben. Es war ein überaus kühner, ja gewagter, aber andererseits ebenso großartiger, wie glücklicher Gedanke. Denn gerade noch im rechten Augenblick, eben noch vor dem Untergange des mittelalterlichen Roms, den G. prophetisch vorausahnte, konnte er daran gehen, mit sozusagen photographischer Treue das antik-mittelalterliche Bild der ewigen Stadt, wie es sich ihm noch darbot, zu reproduzieren, um es verständnisvoll der Nachwelt zu überliefern.
