This book examines, through a selection of novels from African literature, the status of gender in traditional and modern societies. Valued in traditional society for her virginity and destined for marriage and childbearing, women had no right to speak. This marginalized status was overturned by colonial education and the emergence of female novelists who subverted it to propose new roles through feminist and subversive writing.
