Ivan, a Russian orphan, is causing so much trouble for his adoptive family that he is placed in a troubled teen program called Gemstone. Part of Gemstone's program is equine therapy. Both Ivan and Aleski, another Russian, orphan, have been adopted by sisters. Adam, Aleski's brother, has become very jealous of Aleski, disrupting their family life. Adam is placed in the same program as Ivan. In the meantime, Aleski has gone to stay with an uncle and aunt who live in the same city as the Gemstone program. The book focuses on the three boys working out their relationship problems with each other and their families. It culminates when the boys take a bonding trip with sled dogs.
