English summary: Frederick II - called "the Great"- is counted among the most remarkable personalities of German history and cultural memory. It is above all the image of "Old Ffritz" that has marked the collective memory till now, though the Prussian king has been remembered and exploited in various media in the more than 200 years since his death: He is considered the first servant of the state and philosopher-king, he was glorified as the field-marshal and national idol, and later pilloried as war-monger and misanthrope. The richly illustrated companion volume to the exhibition in the German Historical Museum offers a broad view over the legacy of Frederick the Great in art, politics and society. In thirteen thematically arrange chapters, the authors span the period from the 18th to the 21st century and track the different perceptions and representations of Frederick in the past two hundred years. In addition to the introductory texts, numerous exhibits offer amusing and exciting insights into the Prussian-German and European culture of memory. The special exhibit "Frederick the Great- venerated, glorified, condemned" runs from March 21st to July 29th, 2012 in the German Historical Museum in Berlin.
