Following the Footsteps of 87th

The discovery of a Civil War-era family diary sets a modern-day couple on a 2,500-mile journey through their ancestry-deepening their understanding and respect for the sacrifices made by thousands of young soldiers.Following the Footsteps of the 87th traces the transformation of three Southern Illinois brothers from farmers to Union soldiers, following their path through training and into some of the war's most historic battles. Their experiences are brought to life through excerpts from personal letters and a diary carried for over 18 months.Though the Van Fossan brothers lived more than 150 years ago, their story echoes the enduring values of courage, sacrifice, and freedom. Descended from German immigrants and tied to earlier generations who fought in the Revolutionary War, their legacy reflects the broader American story.
