Folk Tales- Cardiff Tales

These old stories are rooted in the land and the lives and imaginations of countless generations of Cardiffian, from the Celtic Silurian tribe who fought the Romans, to the working people who dug, carried and shipped the coal that made Cardiff great, to all the people who came from around the world to make Cardiff their home. Folk tales have been passed down by word of mouth through generations of ordinary, extraordinary Cardiff people. Countless Cardiffians have made them, heard them, forgotten them, remembered them – and they have nearly always added their own twist on the way. Luckily for us, some of the storytellers wrote them down in books. These stories share common universal themes of kindness and courage rewarded, of human triumphs and human troubles. They celebrate the creative imagination of our ancestors, featuring marvellous animals, restless ghosts, horrible monsters and strange, otherworldly beings. But all these stories are unique to one place – they all happened right here in Cardiff. Cardiff storyteller Cath Little has searched and researched, reimagined, remade and added her own twist to the tales. These are Cardiff Folk Tales and they belong to us all. Read them, tell them, add your own twist – then pass them on again.
