Bol Most of us know only five generations--our grandparents, our parents, ourselves (who we may know least of all), our children and our grandchildren. Many, unfortunately, know fewer than these. It seems to me important to have links to an intimate grouping whose line leads into a past that was never experienced and into a future that will never be seen. The longer this line, the better. I view this as a measure of personal stability in a world that is becoming progressively more unstable. The juggernaut of change is gaining speed and becoming more destructive of the past, more enamored of the present, and driving helter-skelter into a future where many will be adrift. I hope these memories will give future Kirkwoods something of that sense of continuity.
