This volume explores the many facets of personal identity and self-awareness in ancient Israel. What is explored ranges from the association between space and identity to symbols and objects that evoke and communicate identity (vestments, scepters, staffs, weapons, thrones, and the like) to the sociology of the body, social interaction, aging, disability studies, and appearance. Finally, the theoretical foundation in the first three chapters sets up a discussion in chapter 4 of how characters in the biblical narrative shift their identities over time and through personal initiative.
