The main aim of this book is to build a more solid theoretical foundation for understanding national innovation performance. Within the tradition of evolutionary economics, it attempts to gain insights into the dynamics of economic institutions: a special emphasis is placed on the role of government. The book consists of three parts: the first part elaborates on the the fundamentals of evolutionary economics; the second part develops a dynamic model of institutional change in a national economy; and the final part discusses the practical application of this model in the Netherlands between 1979 and 1997.
