Evil Upon Us began with an image. A trans woman moves forward beneath helicopters, carrying a flag that is both distress signal and transformation. Behind her are the living, the disappeared, and the remembered dead. Ahead of her is the Castro Theater, a place where history, loss, visibility, and reinvention occupy the same geography. This novella was written to follow that image backward and forward: backward into the conditions that made the moment possible, and forward into the obligations the moment leaves behind. The book is fiction, but it is concerned with real questions. What happens when a society learns to adapt to what should disturb it? What happens when people stop looking away? What do the living owe the dead? What does preservation protect, and who does it leave outside the circle? Humans said "Never Again" after WWII and the Nazi atrocities. Yet, here we are in 2026. Are we to continue repeating our mistakes? The answers remain unfinished. So does the movement.
