Ermione

Ermione è un'azione tragica in due atti di Gioachino Rossini su libretto di Andrea Leone Tottola, tratto dalla Andromaque di Racine e rappresentato per la prima volta a Napoli nel 1819. La vicenda si svolge poco dopo la caduta di Troia, a Butroto nell'Epiro, dove Pirro, figlio di Achille, regna e custodisce i prigionieri troiani, tra cui Andromaca, vedova di Ettore, e il loro figlio Astianatte. Promesso sposo di Ermione, figlia di Menelao ed Elena, Pirro si è invece innamorato di Andromaca e intende sposarla, suscitando la gelosia furiosa di Ermione e lo sdegno dei Greci, che reclamano la morte del bambino troiano per evitare una nuova minaccia. Oreste, figlio di Agamennone e innamorato di Ermione, arriva come ambasciatore greco per esigere il sacrificio di Astianatte; Pirro rifiuta con alterigia e annuncia il matrimonio con Andromaca.Nel secondo atto Andromaca, pur fedele alla memoria di Ettore, accetta apparentemente le nozze per salvare il figlio, ma medita il suicidio dopo la cerimonia. Ermione, dilaniata tra amore, odio e vendetta, istiga Oreste a uccidere Pirro durante il corteo nuziale. Oreste compie l'assassinio e riporta il pugnale insanguinato; Ermione, in preda al rimorso, lo respinge rivelando il suo amore per la vittima e lo maledice. Mentre il popolo si scatena, Oreste viene trascinato via dal fedele Pilade in preda alla follia, e Ermione crolla nella disperazione più assoluta. L'opera si conclude in un'atmosfera di tragedia senza riscatto.Ermione is a tragic opera in two acts by Gioachino Rossini, with a libretto by Andrea Leone Tottola, based on Racine's Andromaque and first performed in Naples in 1819. The story is set shortly after the fall of Troy, in Butroto in Epirus, where Pyrrhus, son of Achilles, reigns and holds the Trojan prisoners captive, including Andromache, widow of Hector, and their son Astyanax. Although betrothed to Hermione, daughter of Menelaus and Helen, Pyrrhus has instead fallen in love with Andromache and intends to marry her, arousing Hermione's furious jealousy and the indignation of the Greeks, who demand the death of the Trojan child to avert a new threat. Orestes, son of Agamemnon and in love with Hermione, arrives as a Greek ambassador to demand the sacrifice of Astyanax; Pyrrhus haughtily refuses and announces his marriage to Andromache.In the second act, Andromache, whilst remaining faithful to the memory of Hector, ostensibly accepts the marriage to save her son, but contemplates suicide after the ceremony. Hermione, torn between love, hatred and revenge, incites Orestes to kill Pyrrhus during the wedding procession. Orestes carries out the murder and returns with the bloodstained dagger; Hermione, overcome with remorse, rejects him, revealing her love for the victim, and curses him. As the crowd runs riot, Orestes is dragged away by his faithful friend Pylades, who has been driven mad, whilst Hermione collapses into utter despair. The opera concludes in an atmosphere of tragedy without redemption.
