Bol Partner Erich Heckel (1883-1970) was an artist on a journey who like no other explored the different landscapes and regions of Europe in an attempt to capture their respective light and artistic character. He tested his ideas in watercolor image technology in order to later develop them into large-scale oil paintings in his studio. 120 watercolors from all the creative phases of Erich Heckel's artistic career show his stylistic development in this medium. They are typical of the way the artist visually captured the object in its natural appearance as rapid notation under the conditions of a particular moment, and thus allowed for picture ideas to be first tested on paper with watercolors before they were then transferred to a larger format. All gathered watercolors and resulting oil paintings are shown as full-page color plates. This allows for a direct juxtaposition of his work in various stages and makes the origins of his art visible. German text.
