In the vast and jagged gallery of Hellenistic monarchs, very few figures have suffered a historiographical fate as controversial, distorted, and reductive as Antiochus IV of the Seleucid dynasty. Crushed between the unappealable condemnation of Old Testament Jewish literature-which in the Books of the Maccabees and in the apocalyptic visions of Daniel consigned him to the memory of the centuries as the archetype of the sacrilegious persecutor, the very embodiment of the "abomination of desolation"-and the sarcasm of pro-Roman historiography led by Polybius, skilled in dismissing his brilliance and political unpredictability by degrading the sacred epithet Epiphanes ("God Manifest") into the mocking Epimanes ("the Madman"), the sovereign of Antioch has long remained prisoner to an absurd and unjustified caricatural mask. This new historical novel by Nicola Bizzi accomplishes a literary and historiographical undertaking of extraordinary value, as long-awaited as it is necessary: it shatters that mask, restoring Antiochus IV to his authentic, dramatic dimension as a man of his time. Not an obtuse and bloodthirsty tyrant, nor a madman consumed by blind megalomaniacal delirium, but rather the last great scion of classical paideia lent to the helm of a fragile and torn empire; a cultured sovereign, a disciple of the Academy and of Stoicism, formed as much in the austere and pragmatic workshop of republican power in Rome as in the radiant philosophical climate of archontic Athens. Through solemn and evocative prose, the chapters of the work mark out the crucial moments of the life and deeds of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, presenting the Seleucid sovereign to us in a new light, and humanizing the sublime contradiction of the Philosopher-King who, in the extreme attempt to preserve freedom, Hellenism, and paideia, finds himself confronting obstacles and enemies perhaps far greater than himself, as well as the inexorable weavings of destiny. Epiphaneia: The Dream of the Last God offers us a historical fresco of profound evocative intensity, capable of restoring to the reader the breath, the tempests, and the timeless fascination of one of the most decisive and tormented epochs in human history.
