The purpose of our study is to highlight ESL teachers' perceptions of the oral fluency of sixth-grade elementary school students, as well as the context in which they teach this subject, their own training in this discipline, the curriculum, and the teaching practices they employ in a Francophone context in the Mauricie region. Since intensive English instruction is currently provided by teachers with experience teaching English as a second language at the elementary level, our research suggests that there is an important research avenue to explore regarding the most effective way to train teachers in this discipline for the intensive teaching context in 6th grade, drawing on their expertise. A second avenue emerging from our research is the need to conceptualize and develop instructional materials for English teachers in an intensive English context. Those interested in this area of instruction may collaborate with these teachers to develop such materials as part of a collaborative research project.
