Empyrean: A Holocaust Novel

Bavaria, 1945. Recovering from a German bullet in the Ardennes, an American captain is visited by a lieutenant carrying a report from a newly discovered concentration camp: starving prisoners, bodies stacked behind a shed, rooms filled with shoes and hair. With Soviet forces closing in on Berlin, Allied command intends to keep the advance moving and leave only minimal forces behind. The captain sees the next catastrophe taking shape. Without food, medicine, and security, survivors will continue to die after the gates open. Guards will disappear. Evidence will be destroyed. Grief will find new targets.Still wounded, the captain travels with Sabina, a French nurse who refuses to let orders determine whom she will save, and Chaplain Pierson, whose faith demands more than obedience. But under Major Lindley, Operation Mercy Torch answers catastrophe with locked gates, rationing, and orders to wait-measures that deepen the suffering the mission was created to prevent.Inside a remote Bavarian concentration camp, Jewish poet Ionel Abramovich and his wife, Esther, cling to one hope: their daughter, Miriam, may still be alive. Forced to keep records for an SS physician who turns prisoners' suffering into medical data, Ionel learns that a line of ink can spare a life, condemn another, or purchase one more day for his family. The work that keeps them alive may also mark them as collaborators. When Mercy Torch reaches the camp, liberation arrives amid hunger, disease, suspicion, and revenge. To keep a mission founded on mercy from becoming another instrument of suffering, the captain must decide what duty requires when conscience demands disobedience.EMPYREAN is a haunting historical novel of moral injury, survival under coercion, and the perilous distance between intending mercy and choosing it.
