The celebrated writer Arthur Conan Doyle stands at the pinnacle of his career. Having just killed off Sherlock Holmes -- and finding himself transformed into a celebrity figure whose fame has become an uncomfortable burden -- he decides to flee England for the United States. Yet aboard the German steamship *Elbe*, what he finds is not respite, but the beginning of an unsettling mystery: passengers dying without apparent cause, coffins concealing secrets, séances that turn all too real... and a message that bursts forth like a warning: "We are six." Very soon, Doyle finds himself drawn into a plot spanning continents and creeds -- a convergence involving a Kabbalist rabbi guided by visions, a Lakota woman capable of reading souls, a Japanese priest on a sacred mission, and a maharajah versed in ancient texts. It is then that he crosses paths with Jack Sparks -- an old adventuring companion and a spy in the service of Her Imperial Majesty Queen Victoria -- the very figure who inspired him to create Sherlock Holmes. All are bound together by the same terrifying certainty: someone is gathering the world's sacred texts in order to destroy them and open the door to a messiah of darkness.
