Bol In his commentary on the 99 Divine Names, a doctrine of Islam introduced in the Quran ("To God belong the most beautiful names, so invoke Him by them!" 7:180) and in the Sunnah ("God has ninety-nine names, one hundred minus one, and whoever enumerates them will enter Paradise"), Ibn Arabi devoted two specific writings. The first, entitled The Unveiling of the Meaning that Reveals the Secret of the Most Beautiful Names of God, expounds on various aspects of each divine Name from three perspectives: "necessity," "realization," and "adoption." The second, much more extensive, is chapter 558 of his magnum opus, The Meccan Revelations (al-Futuhat al-makkiyya), which actually contains two successive commentaries. The brief section that closes the chapter presents a complete commentary on the 99 Names which, due to its style, structure, and content, can be considered independent from the rest. Both texts allow us to delve, with rigor and depth, into the spiritual architecture with which Ibn Arabi illuminates the secret meaning of the divine Names.
