The story revolves around a young orphaned girl named Rose Campbell. After her parents' deaths, Rose is taken in by her great-aunts, who are collectively referred to as the "Aunt-Hill" due to their large number. Rose finds herself in the care of her maiden aunts: Aunt Plenty, Aunt Myra, and Aunt Peace, among others.Rose is initially frail and delicate due to overprotection and lack of proper guidance. However, under the influence of her uncles and aunts, especially the energetic and unconventional Uncle Alec, Rose's life undergoes a transformation. Uncle Alec takes charge of her upbringing and introduces her to a healthier, more active lifestyle. He encourages her to spend time outdoors, engage in physical activities, and form friendships with her seven boy cousins, hence the title "Eight Cousins."
