We cannot reject the new developments in human history-and globalization is one of them-but as educators and philosophers, we have a duty to evaluate it in light of what it means for humanity, as we understand and interpret it. Democracy and the breaking down of borders in the "global village"-so highly touted by neoliberalism-have become an excuse to cross borders without even asking for permission. That peoples may be stripped of their cultural, historical, and personal values is of no concern to hyper-liberalism. Its sole goal is unchecked enrichment through the exploitation of the natural and cultural environment on a global scale. The French or Marxist revolution has yet to be fulfilled: freedom is reserved solely for the world's wealthy, as is equality. As for fraternity, could it ever even come to pass?
