Four British children-Emma, Charlotte, Ethan, and Tom-find themselves transported from modern-day England to the bustling streets of Samarkand in 1290. Confused yet excited, they meet Marco Polo, on his way from China to Italy, who regales them with stories of golden cities and distant wonders. They befriend Jamil, a kind merchant preparing for a caravan journey from Samarkand to Termez, and enthralled by Marco Polo's tales of trade and travel, they join him. Their journey in the desert on the back of camels includes encounters with brigands, a cheeky boy selling a "treasure map," and Tibetan monks sharing mystical stories.
