DO NOT OPEN ALL AT ONCE

There are twelve boxes. Open them in order. Do not open all at once. Three days after archivist Gabriel Bell's funeral, his daughter Ada receives twelve numbered boxes and a final set of instructions. Inside are a letter, a photograph, a recording, a receipt, a key, an apology - and the fragments of a fire that destroyed Bell House twenty-nine years earlier. Ada has always known what happened that night: one man died, her mother disappeared, and her father survived to raise her alone. But each box alters the one before it. As names change, witnesses contradict themselves, and the dead begin speaking through paper and tape, Ada discovers that the archive her father preserved was also the story he controlled. The final box does not identify the person most responsible. It asks what responsibility means once innocence is no longer possible. A literary psychological mystery about memory, family, guilt, and the dangerous difference between preserving the past and telling the truth.
