Exploring the complexities of individual and group behavior within dynamic, real-world environments represents an important evolution in sport science research. This book challenges the limitations of traditional, reductionist approaches to perception-action behaviors that have caused a notable "applied-research gap," where research often fails to translate effectively to the dynamic and complex nature of competitive sports. Utilizing the ecological dynamics framework rooted in dynamical systems theory that conceptualizes individuals and teams as complex adaptive systems situated within their environment. The author explores human behavior as a continuous, dynamic interplay between a person's sensorimotor perceptions and action behaviors as coupled within a continuously changing environment. Through this approach he presents a more holistic and integrated understanding of how athletes and teams perceive, adapt, and coordinate their action behaviors in response to the constraints and opportunities relative to their surroundings.
